Regular verbs in Spanish

Regular verbs in Spanish are verbs that follow a set pattern when conjugated. This means that the endings of the verb change in a predictable way depending on the tense, person, and number of the subject.

There are three types of regular verbs in Spanish: -ar verbs, -er verbs, and -ir verbs. The endings of these verbs are as follows:

yoÉl/Ella/UstedNosotros/NosotrasVosotros/VosotrasEllos/Ellas/Ustedes

Once you have a good understanding of regular verbs, you can start to learn irregular verbs. Irregular verbs are verbs that do not follow the regular pattern of conjugation. There are many irregular verbs in Spanish, but they make up a relatively small percentage of all verbs.

Learning irregular verbs can be challenging, but it is important to persevere. With practice, you will be able to conjugate irregular verbs with ease.

Rules to Conjugate Regular verbs in 3 steps

To Conjugate -ar, -er and -ir verbs you have to remove the -ar, -er, or -ir and add a new ending. There are 3 easy steps to follow:

  1. Find the Infinitives: Infinitives are verbs that end in -ar, -er & -ir. They are verbs that have not been conjugated. In English, they are what we call “to verbs”. To run, to talk, to eat, etc. Examples: hablar, comer, escribir
    • -ar verbs: -ar verbs are simply verbs that end in -ar. For example: cantar, hablar, bailar, dibujar, etc.
    • er verbs: -er verbs are simply verbs that end in -er. For example: comer, barrer, leer.
    • -ir verbs: -ir verbs are simply verbs that end in -ir. For example: vivir, escribir.
  2. Follow the rules to conjugate. For -ar verbs: Remove the -ar and add a new ending. For -er verbs: Remove the -er and add a new ending. For -ir verbs: Remove the -ir and add a new ending.
  3. The new ending depends on who is performing the action. See Charts Below:
