Spanish Grammar at a Glance

These handouts were created to use as a reference in a variety of Grammar topics in Spanish. Think of them as a summary of specific grammar concepts. They contain the critical information and focus on the must-know points of the lesson.

Adjectives: Adjectives in Spanish must match in gender and number to the noun they describe. There is a general rule to follow. Learn more about how to use adjectives in Spanish using this handout.

Subject Pronouns in Spanish: This handout summarizes all of the subject pronouns (yo, tú, él, ella, Ud., nosotros(as), vosotros(as), ellos, ellas, Uds.)  in Spanish and provides a few tips to help you remember.

The Verb Ser: Ser in Spanish means (to be). Learn how to conjugate the verb ser to talk about how people and things are. Ser is an irregular verbs. Therefore, it is essential to memorize its conjugations.

The Verb Estar: Learn how to conjugate the present tense of the verb Estar (to be) in Spanish. Estar is an irregular verb; therefore, it is important to memorize its conjugations. Estar can be used to talk about how we feel (emotions and also temporary conditions). In addition, learn how to use Estar to talk about where things are in general and also where they are in relation to other people or things.

The Verb Gustar: Gustar is used to talk about what we like, however, its literal meaning is “something is pleasing to me”. Because of this we have to use indirect object pronouns since the subject is NOT the one performing the action. Gustar doesn’t work like a regular -ar verb therefore we have to be careful how to conjugate it. There are two forms of the verb gustar (gusta for singular things and gustan for plural things). In addition we also learn how to use gustar + infinitives to talk about the things we like to do. For example, I like to sing. Me gusta cantar.

The Verb Encantar: The verb encantar is used to talk about things we love. Think of it as a higher degree of gustar which is to like. The verb encantar works just like the verb gustar. We have to use indirect object pronouns and there are two forms of the verb (encanta and encantan).

The Verb Parecer: The verb parecer is used to talk about how something may seem to us. It works just like the verbs gustar and encantar. There are two forms of the verb parecer (parece and parecen). We have to use indirect object pronouns with the verb parecer.

The Verb Tener: Tener (to have) is an irregular verb. Learn how to conjugate this verb in the present tense. Tener is also use with certain expressions in Spanish to talk about things such as: hunger, age, thirst, fear.

Tener que + Infinitive: Learn how to use the verb tener (to have) + the infinitive of a verb to learn how to talk about the things you and others have to do. For example, I have to clean the dishes. Tengo que lavar los platos.

-ar Verbs: Learning how to conjugate verbs that end in -ar is an essential skill in Spanish. To conjugate -ar verbs in the present tense we must take off the -ar and add a new ending depending on who is performing the action.

-er Verbs: Learning how to conjugate verbs that end in -er is an essential skill in Spanish. To conjugate -er verbs in the present tense we must take off the -er and add a new ending depending on who is performing the action.

-ir Verbs: Learning how to conjugate verbs that end in -ir is an essential skill in Spanish. To conjugate -ir verbs in the present tense we must take off the -ir and add a new ending depending on who is performing the action.

Stem Changing Verbs e-ie: There are some verbs that are stem changing verbs. That means in addition to having a change in the ending, they also have a change in the stem. These specific verbs have an e in the stem that changes to ie in all forms except for nosotros and vosotros.

Stem Changing Verbs o-ue: There are some verbs that are stem changing verbs. That means in addition to having a change in the ending, they also have a change in the stem. These specific verbs have an o in the stem that changes to ue in all forms except for nosotros and vosotros.

Stem Changing Verbs e-i: There are some verbs that are stem changing verbs. That means in addition to having a change in the ending, they also have a change in the stem. These specific verbs have an e in the stem that changes to i in all forms except for nosotros and vosotros.

The Verb ir: Ir is an irregular verb. The verb means to go. To talk about where someone is going we use ir a + place.

Reflexive Verbs: Reflexive verbs are verbs in which the subject and the object of the verb are the same. In other words, the person that performs the action receives the action. We must use reflexive pronouns with reflexive verbs.

Present Progressive: It is used to talk about the actions that are taking place (now). To form the present progressive use the present tense of the verb estar plus the present participle of the verb.

The Verb Doler: Doler is used to talk about pain or when something hurts. It works very similar to the verb Gustar. To use doler, we must use indirect object pronouns instead of subject pronouns.

Go-Verbs: These verbs are irregular. They have a -go in the Yo form. To learn how to conjugate them, always remember to check the yo form of the verb. Common go verbs are: hacer, poner, salir and traer.

Preterite of -ar verbs: The preterite is used to talk about an action that occurred at a specific point in the past. The action was completed. To conjugate -ar verbs in the preterite, take off the -ar and add new endings (different than those in the present tense).

Preterite of -er & -ir verbs: The preterite is used to talk about an action that occurred at a specific point in the past. The action was completed. To conjugate -er & -ir verbs in the preterite, take off the -er or -ir and add new endings (different from those in the present tense).
